The Lemonheads Biography

While attending the Commonwealth High School in Boston, MA, Evan Dando formed the Lemonheads with Ben Deily in 1986. Originally, a punk outfit known as The Whelps, the band changed their name to The Lemonheads in 1987 and, after Dando dropped out of Skidmore College to concentrate on his music, the band signed to the local alternative label Taang! Records off which they released three albums: Hate Your Friends, Creator and Lick. Deily left the band in 1989 before they signed to Atlantic Records which lead to the release of 1990's hard-edged, punk but grunge-sounding, before its time, Lovey, which tanked. The band's next album, 1992's It's a Shame About Ray, broke The Lemonheads through to the mainstream with their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson, which, ironically, was not part of the original release and was tacked onto the album after its success upon the release of The Graduate onto video. ..Ray made Dando the it boy for Atlantic Records over the next year, especially with the release of Come on Feel the Lemonheads in 1993 and the hit single Into Your Arms. Success proved difficult for Dando to handle, leading to a serious drug problem including an addiction to crack, plummeting him to an inability to perform and the break-up of the original line-up. In 1996, Dando reformed The Lemonheads with a new backing band and released Car Button Cloth, which spawned the popular single If I Could Talk I'd Tell You, but otherwise showed a peek into darker side of Dando's mind. After touring to support the album throughout most of 1996 and 1997, Dando mysteriously disappeared from the rock radar for four years until he began performing solo shows and eventually releasing the album Baby I'm Bored. In 2006, a newly formed Lemonheads began recording a new album with Vagrant Records which will be released in September 2006.
